Caricatures
from the Cartoon Collection

The caricatures are from the collection of Gordon Brewster's cartoons in the National Library of Ireland.

It is not clear what percentage of Gordon's cartoon output the collection represents. It covers a limited period and I would imagine that he produced cartoons both before and after this period. Equally the time pattern of the collection shows serious variations in his annual output within the collection period itself and it is not clear if these reflect periods when he was not submitting cartoons for publication or if many of those he did have not ended up in this particular collection. I am aware that his cartoons were much sought after following his death and many originals were given away. But these could have been from either earlier or later periods than those covered by the present collection. All these questions would benefit from further research. Meanwhile, the timeline of the current collection, is shown below. This is taken from the National Library's online catalogue.



The National Library has done a great job in putting the collection online where all the world can see and enjoy it. It will hopefully provoke further study of Gordon Brewster himself and of his wonderful cartoons.

I wanted to look at the caricatures in particular and found it a little awkward, so I have extracted these into a single place where they can be compared and enjoyed. I have linked them directly back to the corresponding cartoons in the onlinecollection.

The images have been modified in some cases to enable the caricature to be viewed as a stand alone image. This has mainly involved taking out some of the material surrounding the caricature itself. I have concentrated mainly on head and shoulders.
