Theatre

I'm taking a fairly liberal meaning out of the word theatre to include street entertainment as well as the traditional auditorium.

An Taibhdhearc

An Taibhdhearc is the national Irish language theatre, founded in 1928. It is open to both professional and amateur performances and is not confined to serious drama.

It does pantomime and I have attended one of these which, if it had been in English, would have been banned or the object of multiple libel/slander actions. It also has a regular Autumn spot illustrating the history of Irish traditional music, called Music at the Crossroads. The promo for this includes traditional Irish music in the street. You can see a picture below and hear a flavour here.

The Druid

The Druid Theatre Company was the first professional Irish theatre company to be formed outside Dublin (1975). It has been responsible for the introduction of many innovations into the Irish theatre scene.

Street Music

There is no shortage of good music in the street, some examples of which are below.

Early in the day this girl was playing the harp on her own. A bit difficult to hear in the noisy pedestrian thoroughfare (thruway!).

Later she teamed up with some other musicians and was much more audible. They also acquired a dancer who was on his break at this point. You can hear a sample here.

This is an international group who were so impressed with the Irish trad scene that they stayed around.

Street Entertainment

There is quite a lot of this sort of mime/statuary performance in the street.

Pubs

And there is no lack of ballads in the pubs in the evenings.
