Garret FitzGerald
Lying in State

21 May 2011

Garrett FitzGerald was lying in state at Dublin's Mansion House, from 11am to 7pm, today (21/5/2011).

Crowds queued and filed through without a break during this period. The mood was subdued and respectful, but you could hear anecdotes about Garret being recalled, even between strangers, as they queued for the required 10 to 15 minutes.

It was a solemn passing round the open coffin, with many people blessing themselves, but you couldn't resist a smile as you saw Garret's impeccably tied pink tie and wondered if his socks matched. He'd have enjoyed the thought.
