Jan van Eyck was the greatest artist of the early Netherlands school. He held high positions throughout his career, including court painter and diplomat in Bruges. He was active from 1422 to 1441. Here he has been pressed into service by language activists who wanted a Flemish rather than a French Flanders. This is my favourite graffito of all time.
