Ballybrack in the 19th century
A History of Ballybrack Village from 1800 to 1900

The Article

I have explained how I became interested in local history here. Following my work on the "French connection" I moved on to the 19th century which was an equally interesting time for the Killiney/Ballybrack area.

It saw the beginning of spec development with environmentally sensitive leases. The advent of the railway in mid- century further increased the attractiveness of the area as a residential suburb of Dublin for those who could afford it, and the area expanded rapidly in the second half of the century. Killiney even had its own township for a period.

When I moved there in 1954 it was still considered part of the countryside and I really felt I was moving "out of Dublin". Dublin has since expanded exponentially and Ballybrack has been swallowed up in the "contrete jungle".

The article may give you some flavour of the area before its urban development and of how it gradually became a sattelite of the capital city.
