Buildings & Monuments

This "b" with the crown is the traditional insignia of Brugge which is reproduced principally on kerbside pillars. It is also used by the College of Europe for the Brugge campus.

This is the flag of Brugge guarded here by some fierce animals on the Eierplein.

This is the backside (literally!) of the previous monument but with the simple gold "b".

Gilded justice in the Burg.

The full building in the Burg showing the extent of the gilt.

More gilt in the Burg.

The concert hall and tourism and cultural centre at the Zand. This was built as part of the "Brugge capital of European culture" year in 2002. The class reunion was held in this building.

The Zand was thronged with students on the Friday lunchtime when I arrived.

Most of whom had clearly come on their bicycles.

Detail from the mid-1980s monument on the Zand.

Fisherman, part of the Zand monument, with the fountain and church of San Salvador in the background. It might remind some of us of one of our own.

Church of San Salvador from the Belfry.

Old Apothecary's beside San Salvador. This is the oldest apothecary in Flanders dating from 1696.

King Albert I. A 1914-18 war memorial honouring him as a soldier who defended his country in WWI.

The Gruuthuse, near the Dijver.

God's House - 1572. There are many God's Houses in Brugge and elsewhere. They were built to house particular categories sick or poor people (eg the blind) and the civil remit stopped at the door. This one seems to have been for the generality of the sick and poor.

Not quite as high as the former spire on the Belfry, but St. Michael, the Archangel, (and I assume it is he) had to put in an appearance somewhere. This is on the roof of a building in the Markt.

This wall crest, at Jan Van Eyckplein, not only has the usual lion rampant, it also has a dragon at the top, a sheep at the bottom that looks like it is being hoisted onto a ferry and a reference to Luxembourg.

And to top it off, so to speak, an alternative to the The Last Supper. This da Vinci is ice cream and the high quality ensures a permanent queue outside. Note the coiled stands on the counter to rest your cone in while you fumble for change.
