You can get a good idea of the degredation of the tower from the photo above. The two panoramic storeys on top reduce the tower itself to absolute insignificance.

I wondered what could have made a man, who professed an interest in Martello towers and was apparently familiar with them worldwide (if one is to judge from the booklet he published) destroy a tower in this way.

I have only seen one other "conversion" to rival this one and that was Fort Saumarez, in Guernsey (CI). This tower was converted by the Germans into an observation post (below) during their occupation of the Channel Islands (1942-45). Perhaps that's where he got the idea? In any event it is all very ironic, n'est-ce pas?
