Edinburgh Castle

The Castle is Edinburgh's Rock of Cashel. Built on rock and towering over the city, the Castle is probably the most famous sight in Edinburgh.

There is a very large yard in front of the entrance to the Castle itself.

The entrance proper is very imposing, guarded by two knightly figures and an imposing warning beneath the crest.

My preferred take on this motto would be "Don't mess with me" but a more proper translation would be "Nobody provokes/attacks me with impunity". I think the Scots version would accord with mine: Wha daur meddle wi me?

I think this would have been some sort of torch, and you can see one of the knightly guardians of the gate in the background.

This is the other knightly guardian of the gate.

I'm very partial to cannon since being in contact with the restoration of Martello Tower No.7 in Killiney Bay. I'll leave it to those who know better to tell me whether these are 18 pounders or not.

Life never stands still, even within the Castle bounds.

There are a number of memorials on the perimeter of the main approach yard to the Castle. This is the Duke of York (1784 - 1827). I don't know if he was the fellow who kept running up and down the hill, but it's probably not important.

This is one to the Indian Mutiny/Rebellion in 1857, or rather to those who put it down.

And finally, the Boer War. We don't see many, if any, of these around in Ireland, though there are associations with that war in some of our place names. For example, Daleview in Ballybrack, where working class houses were built around 1900, was known as the Kop right down to my time. This was a reference to Spion Kop, one of the battles of the Boer War.
