Sarah Burgess Birth Sarah Burgess was born on 9 February 1874 in 122 James's Street, a house that was demolished around 1900. Career Her occupation is listed as "book-keeper" in the 1901 Census but later the same year, when she married Patrick Mortimer, the marriage certificate lists her as having no profession. Marriage She married Patrick Mortimer, a commercial traveller then living in Arnott St., on 21 August 1901. He was 31 and she was 27. I don't know how they met but it may be that she was a book-keeper in a store on Patrick's rounds. She had four children and, after Patrick's untimely death in 1918, she lived in different parts of the city, including James's Street (from which she originated), Gilbert Road (between the South Circular Road and the Coombe) and, from 1936 to 1957, Orwell Gardens (Rathgar). Death She died in 1958 in Ballybrack where she had gone to live with her daughter's family (Sarah O'Dwyer, ne Mortimer). |
