Killiney Rescue
What's the Story?

An annotation on the back of this picture suggests it was taken on 4 August 1937. It shows a chain of rescuers linking out to rescue someone from the sea.
Beyond this I'm relying on a story that says the person being rescued was a pilot, whose plane had presumably crashed, and that the activity happened in Killiney Bay.
This surely would have been an incident worthy of being reported in the newspapers at the time but there does not appear to be any trace of it.
The only thing we know for sure is that the man out towards the end of the chain who is looking straight at the camera is Denis O'Donoghue (Donnchdha Ua Donnchadha), father of Niall, who has restored No.7 Martello Tower overlooking the Bay, and who is in possession of the original copy of the photo.

Any help in getting at the full story behind the picture would be welcome.
