Nos. 40 and 39
The Aherns lived in No. 39. They were Protestants, but, as my mother would say, very nice people. As I recollect, there were quite a few Protestant families in the Gardens. It was a bit odd for those of us from an even mildly republican background to see a portrait of the King, or subsequently the Queen, of England on their walls. I remember the class nun in St Louis school in Rathmines telling us what a great day it was for Ireland when the King of England (the present Queen's father) died. I tried to share my joy with a slightly older female neighbour on my way home from school only to be told of her grief at the loss of the head of her Church. You live and learn.
