Eiffel Tower 1988

This is a general view of the tower looking south from the Palais de Chaillot at the northern edge of the Champ de Mars.

Note the Montparnasse tower in the background. That tower was built in 1974 and is 210m high, compared with the Eiffel Tower's 300m (excluding the TV aerial).

The tower is very impressive, even from half way up. Note the wire meshing to prevent people jumping off the tower, which has been a traditional location for suicides.

Of the approximately 400 suicide attempts recorded to date only two proved unsuccessful.
This is the second deck of the tower which is quite spacious. This level provides some very good panoramas over the city.

The tower consists of 18,038 pieces of steel and 2½ million rivets. It took 300 steel workers to put it up. The only worker to die during the construction was installing an Otis lift
View from the second deck of the tower looking south. The impressive military college is at the end of the green space. Behind, and to the right, is the UNESCO building, an architectural innovation in its day. Further back, in the absence of the tower itself, the Monparnasse building dominates the horizon, even from this height.
View from the second deck of the tower looking north. The impressive layout of the Jardins du Trocadero and the architecture of the Palais de Chaillot are enhanced from this perspective. This is clearly not one of my own photos. I'm not that old. I picked it up as a postcard in Paris in 1988 and thought it of interest. The view is from the right bank, ie looking south, the same as my photo of the full tower above.
