The Place, and its cafés, was frequented by many of the impressionist painters in the late 19th and early 20th century.

The Place is very pretty but appears nowadays to be driven almost exclusively by tourism. It was here that the word "bistro" found its way into the French language from the former Russian inhabitants - it means "hurry up" or the like.
Paintings of Paris Street scenes are very popular and proliferate at all outlets.

It is refreshing to see someone actually painting one of them in real life.

They are not now considered high art compared to those of the many now famous artists who populated this quarter in earlier times.
The Place is the place to have your portrait painted. As well as colour chalk and crayon portraits, black and white drawings are quite popular. If you are feeling particularly courageous and secure in yourself [!] you can even get a caricature done which is guaranteed to haunt you for life ever after. Here Fris demonstrates his skill.
