Blog Comments
The example I am giving is from Blogger and uses Firefox as its browser. If you're not using these you'll need to transpose the example into your own blog provider and browser.
The idea is to be able to come to a blog post, skip to the last comment you have read, check out if there have been any comments since, and, if so, bookmark the last one for your next inspection.. As long as the comments stay below 200 for an individual post this system works fine. If the comments exceed 200 then they go on to a second page and the bookmarked permalink which normally delivers you to the latest comment won't do so. You can still use it to check the time of the latest comment you have read. So let's go. The first thing you do is open a folder in your bookmarks dedicated to the particular blog you are dealing with. In my case I have simply called it stuart. You only have to do this once for all time. You are then ready to go to work on the latest blog post.
If you have not already done so, click on the title of the individual post, or go to the line at the bottom of the individual post as shown above. Left click on the permalink (in this case the time at 22:55).
Either of these will bring up the post on its own, and show all the comments underneath in the same format as the post itself with clickable timestamp links. You then read the post and the comments shown. ![]()
To record the position of the latest comment, right click on the permalink for the latest comment (the time and date stamp) and choose Bookmark This Link from the drop down menu.
![]()
Choose the blog's folder (in my case stuart). Click save.
The timestamp is now bookmarked. When you want to check if there are any new comments, left click on the bookmark for the latest comment. This will bring you to that comment. If it is still the last comment, pass on to something else. If there are others below it, read them and bookmark the last one by right clicking on the permalink (time and date stamp) and saving to the appropriate blog folder in your bookmarks.
Repeat the above process each time you come back to visit the blog. You will find that you are accumulating a series of latest comment bookmarks. Keep the bottom one and delete the others. It may sound very tedious and complicated but when you get the hang of it, it becomes second nature and you can very quickly check out any new comments. If you find there are no new comments over a period, it is quite likely that the blogger will have done a new post. To check this out, while in the post, got to the top of the page. Note the title of the post. Click on the actual blog title and you will either see the existing post remain, in which case there is no new post yet, or you will find a new post at the head of the blog. If the latter, left click on the title or the datestamp of the new post. Read the post and bookmark the latest comment in the appropriate blogger's folder, and you are back into the cycle described above. In the case of the Jersey blogs that I follow, I find the above method the most satisfactory. However, if you are someone who posts comments on a thread, then when you are posting you can always ask to be notified of new comments via email. This is all very well if you are the first commenter and if you are dealing with a blog post on which there are very few comments. If there are lots of comments, your mailbox can get very cluttered and it can become a nuisance maintaining it. |
