Cycles

.

While there are clearly thousands of bicycles in use in Brugge, I didn't have the same trouble avoiding getting run over by them as I had in Utrecht. There isn't the same sense of cycle lanes and express trains of bicycles swishing by. They seem to be absorbed by the town and simply pick their way individually between the traffic and the pedestrians on the cobbled streets.

The picture above is only a small section of the vast cycle park at the main train station.

Niklaas Desparsstraat housed my Hotel Nicolas, which I can recommend for friendly service, though the rooms are a bit small if you want to spend the day in them. But this is Brugge so you should be out most of the time. Anyway, the photo is there for the bikes.

You've heard of traffic wardens. Well this is a cycle warden and she appears to have found a bike which is not entitled to park here.

"Hands Off - Marked Bike" is a system whereby a code is engraved, often in a number of places on the bike. This is hard to remove and allows the police to establish the identity of the owner of any such marked bike.
