Gardens' Sign
Orwell Gardens was at the lower end of Rathgar, in more ways than one, when my Granny moved into No. 40 in 1936. The Gardens was a newly built estate then. It was at the lower end of the scale for purchase houses and sitting in the middle of one of the prime social areas of the southside. Granny had been widowed with three children in 1918 and would hardly have been in a position to cruise into the top of the property market. Still, the Gardens was a nice development. A mixed bunch in many ways but with a certain sense of community.
